Compassionate, Evidence-Based Nutrition Counseling in San Antonio
At Bariatric Counseling Center, our registered dietitians take a behavioral approach to nutrition — no restrictive meal plans, no calorie counting, no shame. Just real strategies for building a sustainable relationship with food.
What Sets Our Registered Dietitians Apart
Many nutrition programs in San Antonio follow a traditional diet culture model — restrictive meal plans, calorie counting, and the implication that willpower is the problem. Our registered dietitians work differently.
Our RDs are licensed nutrition specialists with expertise in behavioral nutrition — addressing the behaviors and emotions driving eating patterns, not just what you eat. We use intuitive eating principles to rebuild trust with your body’s hunger and fullness cues, and non-diet approaches that don’t rely on restriction or shame. Our care is trauma-informed, recognizing that food and body concerns often connect to deeper emotional experiences.
We work alongside our licensed therapists to treat the whole person — not just what’s on your plate.
Conditions We Address
Binge Eating and Emotional Eating
If you find yourself turning to food during stress, boredom, or emotional pain, our RDs help you develop coping skills and understand the deeper needs behind those eating episodes — without judgment. We collaborate with our therapists to address both the nutrition and behavioral components.
Post-Bariatric Surgery Nutrition
After weight loss surgery, your nutritional needs change significantly. Our registered dietitians in San Antonio specialize in post-surgical nutrition, helping people navigate new eating patterns, supplement needs, and the emotional adjustment after surgery — whether you are months or years post-op.
Disordered Eating Patterns
From restrictive eating to chaotic patterns, our RDs help identify and shift behaviors that are not serving you. We use evidence-based approaches grounded in nutrition science and behavioral psychology.
Building Sustainable Eating Habits
You do not need a perfect diet. You need an eating approach that fits your life, values, and goals. Our registered dietitians help you identify realistic, sustainable eating habits that actually last.
How Nutrition Counseling Works at BCC
When you meet with a registered dietitian at Bariatric Counseling Center in San Antonio, expect a collaborative conversation — not a lecture or prescription.
In your first session, we learn about your history with food, previous diets you have tried, what works and what does not for your body, and what is really driving your eating behaviors. We ask questions and listen.
Rather than handing you a meal plan, we work together to identify specific behavioral changes that will make the most difference for you. These might include identifying triggers for overeating or undereating, building self-compassion and removing shame from eating experiences, developing practical problem-solving skills for challenging eating situations, reconnecting with your body’s hunger and fullness signals, and creating a flexible, personalized approach to nutrition that feels good.
Clients work with our RDs as part of our comprehensive program, which combines nutrition counseling with behavioral health therapy for deeper, faster progress.
Registered Dietitian vs. Nutritionist
In San Antonio and across Texas, the terms “dietitian” and “nutritionist” are sometimes used interchangeably — but they are not the same. Our team members are registered, licensed professionals with specific credentials, supervised practice, and ongoing education requirements.

Insurance
We accept most major insurance plans for nutrition counseling services. Many plans cover registered dietitian visits. We are happy to verify your coverage and explain what to expect financially before your first appointment. Many individuals attend our program at no out-of-pocket cost.
If you are uninsured or prefer to pay out-of-pocket, we offer affordable self-pay rates and payment plans.

Meet our registered dietitian team
What is the difference between a registered dietitian and a nutritionist?
A registered dietitian (RD) holds a credential from the Commission on Dietetic Registration, which requires specific education, supervised clinical practice, and ongoing continuing education. In Texas, the term nutritionist is not regulated the same way. All BCC team members are licensed, registered professionals.
Do I need a referral to see a registered dietitian?
No referral is required to schedule an appointment with our registered dietitians. However, if your insurance plan requires a referral for coverage, your primary care provider can provide one. We are happy to verify your insurance benefits before your first visit.
Does insurance cover nutrition counseling?
Most insurance plans cover registered dietitian visits, especially when referred by a physician. Coverage varies by plan. We accept most major insurance and can verify your benefits before your first appointment. Self-pay options and payment plans are also available.
What should I expect in my first nutrition counseling session?
Your first session is a collaborative conversation where we learn about your history with food, previous approaches you have tried, and what is driving your current eating behaviors. Rather than handing you a meal plan, we work together to identify specific behavioral changes that will make the most difference for you.
