Eating Disorder Therapist Near Me: How to Find the Right Fit

What an Eating Disorder Therapist Does

An eating disorder therapist is a licensed mental health clinician trained to treat disordered eating patterns and clinical eating disorders — binge eating disorder, bulimia, anorexia, ARFID, OSFED, and the disordered eating that falls outside formal diagnoses but still shapes a person’s life. The work happens in talk therapy, often paired with nutrition counseling from a registered dietitian.

At Bariatric Counseling Center, our therapists are LPCs, LCSWs, LMFTs, and psychologists. We treat eating disorders alongside the broader patterns we see most often in our work: emotional eating, food preoccupation, body image distress, and the long shadow of chronic dieting.

What to Look For

Look for a clinician who is licensed in your state and who has specific training in eating disorders — not just general anxiety or depression therapy. Eating disorder care has its own evidence base, its own ethical guardrails, and a different therapeutic posture than general talk therapy.

Look for anti-diet, trauma-informed care. A strong therapist will not measure your progress by weight, will not push you toward restriction, and will not use before-and-after framing. Eating disorder recovery is about restoring a person’s relationship with food and their body — not hitting a target on a scale.

Look for people-first language. Care should respect people living in larger bodies and should never frame the body as something to fight or fix.

What Care at BCC Looks Like

Most clients start with an intake conversation. From there, the care team matches you with a therapist whose training fits what you are working on. Many clients also add a registered dietitian for the food-and-body side of recovery, and some step into our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) when the work needs more structure than weekly sessions provide.

Our IOP brings therapy, nutrition education, mindful eating, movement, and a chef-led kitchen together into a structured weekly schedule. It is designed for adults navigating binge eating, emotional eating, or longstanding disordered patterns that have not responded to outpatient therapy alone.

Where We Can Work With You

BCC is based in San Antonio. We see clients in person at our Huebner Road office and by secure telehealth across Texas. Many clients in the Rio Grande Valley, Austin, Houston, Dallas-Fort Worth, El Paso, and smaller Texas communities work with us entirely by video because specialty eating disorder care is hard to find locally.

Telehealth licensing limits us to clients physically located in Texas at the time of session. If you are outside Texas, we can still help you think through what to look for in a local provider and which questions to ask.

Frequently Asked Questions

How do I know if I need an eating disorder therapist?

If your relationship with food, eating, or your body takes up significant mental space, if eating patterns feel out of your control, if you find yourself thinking about food or weight more than you want to, or if you have been dieting for years without sustainable change, talking with a specialist is worth it. You do not need a formal diagnosis to be a good fit for care.

Does insurance cover eating disorder therapy?

Often yes. Eating disorders are recognized mental health conditions and most major insurance carriers cover therapy with a licensed clinician. BCC is in-network with most major carriers and verifies benefits before your first session. Most clients pay $0 out of pocket.

Should I see a therapist or a dietitian first?

There is no single right answer. Many BCC clients see both, often at the same time. The intake team helps you decide what to start with based on what is happening for you right now.

Can I do this by telehealth?

Yes. BCC offers secure telehealth across Texas. Many clients prefer telehealth because it removes the friction of driving to an office and makes care possible in regions where specialty eating disorder care is not available locally.
