Eating Disorder Group Therapy in San Antonio, TX
One of the hardest parts of struggling with food is the isolation. You assume no one else understands the secrecy, the shame, or the loop of bingeing and regret. They do, and sitting in a room with people who truly get it is one of the most powerful experiences in recovery. The Bariatric Counseling Center in San Antonio offers eating disorder group therapy led by licensed clinicians, as part of a Joint Commission Gold Seal of Approval accredited program. Group is not an add-on at BCC. It is a central, evidence-based pillar of how overeaters and people with binge eating disorder get better.
What Eating Disorder Group Therapy at BCC Actually Looks Like
Group therapy at BCC is structured and clinically facilitated, not an open-mic venting session. Each group is run by licensed mental health professionals and follows a focused curriculum drawn from the same evidence-based modalities that anchor our whole program. You practice skills, get real-time feedback, and watch others apply the same tools to struggles that mirror your own. That shared practice is what makes group so effective for eating disorders specifically, food behaviors thrive in secrecy, and group brings them into a safe, supportive light.
Our groups are woven into a structured Intensive Outpatient Program that runs about three months and roughly 30 sessions, meeting two to three times per week. Within that, you experience several formats together: skills-based groups, process groups, and experiential sessions like mindful eating, cooking classes, and guided grocery store tours where the group learns and practices side by side. This combination is the only program of its kind in Texas.
Our Clinical Approach and the Team in the Room
Eating disorder recovery requires emotional, cognitive, and behavioral change, and our group curriculum is built on the modalities proven to deliver it:
- DBT and RO-DBT groups that build emotional regulation and distress tolerance
- CBT and CBT-E groups that interrupt the thoughts driving binge and restrict cycles
- ACT groups that reconnect you with your values and a life bigger than food
- Process and family groups so connection extends to the people who support you
- Experiential groups, mindful eating, cooking classes, and grocery store tours, that turn skills into real-world habit
Behind the groups is a multidisciplinary team: clinical psychologists and licensed professional counselors, registered dietitians, a registered nurse, and a professional chef. That means a group focused on nutrition is led by someone who actually understands nutrition, and a group focused on emotional eating is led by a licensed clinician. BCC treats adults; our specialty is binge eating disorder, compulsive overeating, and food addiction.

Frequently Asked Questions
How is group therapy helpful for eating disorders?
Eating disorders feed on isolation and secrecy. Group therapy breaks both by surrounding you with people who understand, while a licensed clinician guides skill-building and accountability. Many people find group to be the part of treatment where change finally sticks.
Do I attend group therapy by itself, or with other care?
At BCC, group therapy is part of a comprehensive IOP that also includes individual therapy, family therapy, and nutrition support. The combination is more effective than group alone.
Is eating disorder group therapy covered by insurance?
Usually yes, as part of IOP. BCC is in-network with major Texas carriers including BCBS, Aetna, Cigna, UnitedHealthcare, and Tricare, and we accept CareCredit. We also file appeals at no cost if a claim is denied.
Can I join group therapy from outside San Antonio?
Yes. We serve patients throughout all of Texas via telehealth, so you can participate in group sessions from home.
Who leads the groups?
All BCC groups are facilitated by licensed mental health professionals, supported by registered dietitians and a professional chef for nutrition- and food-focused sessions.
