Body Confidence Counseling in San Antonio, TX

Body Confidence Is Not a Reward for Reaching a Number

Most messages about body confidence promise it will arrive after enough weight is lost. That is not how it works. People who reach a goal weight without addressing their relationship with their body often arrive there feeling exactly as they did before — only thinner, and still anxious about food, mirrors, and clothes. Body confidence is its own skill set, built through self-compassion, accurate information, and steady practice. It is available right now, in the body you have today.

At Bariatric Counseling Center, our licensed therapists offer body confidence counseling to adults in San Antonio who want to feel less at war with their reflection and more grounded in their own life.

What Body Confidence Counseling Addresses

Counseling sessions look at the specific places body image shows up: getting dressed, family meals, social media, intimacy, doctor visits, exercise, photographs, swimsuits, weddings, work events. We work on the inner voice that narrates these moments. We unpack messages absorbed from family, culture, and past providers. We practice tools you can actually use — urge surfing, cognitive defusion, self-compassion, values work, and steady exposure to the parts of life that diet thinking has shrunk.

If you also work with a BCC dietitian or movement specialist, the body image work integrates directly with how you eat and move, so the change you make is layered, not separated into parts.

An Approach Without Shame

Our therapists use weight-neutral, trauma-informed, people-first language. We do not use before-and-after framing. We do not tell you the goal is to feel beautiful by anyone else’s definition. The goal is for the body you live in to feel like a place you can rest, take care of yourself, move through your day, and pursue what matters to you.

Many clients come to body confidence counseling alongside therapy for emotional eating, depression, anxiety, post-surgical adjustment, or recovery from disordered eating. Whatever brought you here, the work is yours to shape.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will body confidence counseling help me lose weight?

We do not frame this work as a weight loss intervention. Some clients lose weight, some do not, and some are not pursuing weight change at all. The measurable outcomes we work toward are reduced shame, healthier coping, less rigid food rules, more flexible self-talk, and a stable sense of self regardless of body size.

Is this the same as eating disorder treatment?

Body confidence counseling overlaps with eating disorder care but is not the same. If your relationship with food meets criteria for a clinical eating disorder, your therapist may recommend our specialized eating disorder services. Otherwise, this work focuses on body image, self-compassion, and behavior.

Can I do body confidence counseling while pursuing weight management?

Yes. Many clients work on body image alongside nutrition counseling, GLP-1 medication management with their physician, or bariatric surgery preparation. The two efforts support each other when they are weight-neutral in framing.

Do you accept insurance?

Yes. BCC accepts insurance and most clients pay $0 out of pocket. Our intake team will verify your benefits before your first session.

“We Never Talked About Weight”

Jessica expected weigh-ins and meal plans. What she found at BCC was a program about feelings, patterns, and the reasons we eat.
