What Is Binge Eating Disorder?
Binge eating disorder (BED) is a serious but treatable condition characterized by:
- Eating large amounts of food in a short period
- Feeling a loss of control during eating episodes
- Eating when not physically hungry
- Eating alone due to embarrassment
- Feeling disgusted, depressed, or guilty afterward
- Episodes occur at least once a week for 3 months
Binge eating is not a lack of willpower. It’s a complex condition with psychological, biological, and social roots. Whether you identify as a compulsive overeater, a stress eater, or someone who just feels out of control around food, our therapists meet you where you are.
Why BCC Is Different
Our San Antonio program takes a whole-person approach that goes beyond traditional talk therapy. Binge eating and compulsive overeating often overlap — many overeaters experience both patterns at different times, and we address all of them.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is binge eating disorder a real eating disorder?
Yes. Binge eating disorder (BED) was officially recognized in the DSM-5 in 2013. It’s the most common eating disorder in the United States, affecting about 2.8 million Americans.
Do I need to have a certain weight to qualify for treatment?
No. Binge eating disorder affects people of all body sizes. Our program is weight-inclusive and focused on behaviors and wellbeing, not the number on a scale.
How long does binge eating treatment take?
Most clients participate in our intensive outpatient program for 8-16 weeks. Some continue with less frequent therapy sessions afterward. Recovery is a journey, and we’ll work with you to find the right timeline.
Will I have to follow a restrictive diet?
Absolutely not. Restrictive dieting often makes binge eating worse. Our dietitians teach intuitive eating principles and help you develop a sustainable, satisfying way of eating.
Ready to Break Free from Binge Eating?
You’ve tried willpower. You’ve tried diets. It’s time to try something different.
Our compassionate team is here to help you understand why you binge — and give you the tools to stop.

Binge eating therapy here is hands-on. Alongside DBT and CBT-E sessions, clients practice mindful and intuitive eating in our teaching kitchen and on guided grocery-store tours, then bring the people who support them to our monthly Bring a Friend nights. It is a behavioral, non-diet approach for adults in San Antonio and across Texas who feel out of control around food, whether or not they have ever had bariatric surgery.
